The Greater Wayzata Area Chamber of Commerce, the Wayzata Crime Prevention Coalition, and the Wayzata Rotary Club are celebrating Minnesota’s Night to Unite
with a
luncheon
on August 7.
The Wayzata Police Department has planned a special program that will honor the memory of Sgt. James Anderson. Sgt. Anderson was shot and killed in the line of duty on August 31, 1982, on his 36th birthday.
On August 31, 1982 at 10:34 AM, Sgt. Anderson responded to a domestic call in Wayzata. A mother and her 37 year old son were having a domestic dispute. She left the apartment and called police from a nearby business.
When she and Officer Anderson returned to the apartment, the male opened the door and shot the officer three times. He took the officer’s gun and fled on foot, going directly
to Wayzata City Hall. He shot at several others, striking one in the abdomen and one in the leg.
He eventually held up at the Wayzata Post Office where his shot at a Minnetonka Police Officer grazed his head. He then took his own life using Sgt. Anderson’s revolver.
The public is invited to the luncheon. Hear the 911 calls, police dispatch, and the sequence of events directly from some of the first officers on the scene. The story is dramatic and moving. We will honor his memory with a special tribute. August 31, 2012 will mark the 30th anniversary of Sgt. Anderson’s death. He will not be forgotten.
